Yoga Teacher Training

Yoga Teacher Training is an opportunity to deepen your practice, to develop your knowledge about Yoga and to learn how to guide others. It can be a life-changing experience where you commit to weekends full of self-enquiry, devotion and growth. A space to get to know yourself better and I know that so many of our graduates really miss those full days dedicated to nothing but Yoga.

Whether you aspire to teach or simply want to explore Yoga on a deeper level, signing up to a Yoga Training is a big commitment. It’s exciting and can open up a whole new world but it can also be daunting. I know many of our experienced students were nervous and had self-doubts about whether they were good enough but for me, this journey isn’t about performing Asana or how instagramable you are. You do however, need to be ready to commit to a daily practice and self- study. Not only this but you need to feel emotionally ready to face all of the challenges that may arise. My teacher training are not surface level and this journey is not always an easy one. It’s not only about cultivating more love and light within you but part of the process is also about being brave enough to face your shadows and the challenges, as you find your own unique pathways that overcome all of this.

As much as social media may reflect a different picture, there is nothing glamourous about teaching Yoga. As a teacher I touch sweaty bodies for a living and as much as its beautiful to watch our students grow and bloom, part of that journey is also holding our students hands through mental health issues, grief and all phases of their lives. Above all else, our role as teachers is Seva, service to our community and this is the primary intention for all authentic teachers.

This teacher training has evolved from all that I have learned over the past 16+ years, from teaching experience and from my trainings with multiple global teachers. One of the things that I wish I had been taught from the very beginning is how to manage my energy as a teacher and as a human being. Yoga teacher burnout is very real and common which is why part of this training is dedicated to understanding the balance of the elemental energies and the Lunar and Solar (Moon & Sun) energies. These opposing energies come together to create harmony within, in such a way that we learn that there are days to pull back and restore and other days, to strive and to move forward.

You learn how to protect and cleanse your energy and the importance of a dedicated self practice. This course is much more than just learning Asana and reading books, it will teach you how to really embody the teachings of Yoga into your every day life. As you move through this journey and as you build your own connection and inspiration, eventually you will be able to tap into your own creativity and you will then start teaching from the heart. Our 200hr foundation training can be the root from which your own authentic, soulful classes can grow, classes that take your students on a journey as opposed to simply just directing Asana.

Yoga Teacher Training is intense, with over 3.5 hours of Asana, Meditation, Mudra and Mantra, this process can really crack you open emotionally. Challenges will no doubt arise.

Can you stay committed amongst life that will be happening around you?

Can you stay open-minded as you are pushed out of your comfort zone?

Can you overcome self-doubt, comparisons and every other emotion that may rise?

I’m a very hands on teacher and quite frankly, some of the teacher trainings that I have attended have shown me the importance of cultivating a compassionate, non-judgmental space, right from day 1. Know that in these trainings, you are always supported and welcomed as you are, held by me and by the group and encouraged to shine your unique light.

Days are started with still seated Meditation, Pranayama and Mudras. On Saturdays, the practice shifts into elemental Vinyasa Flow and on Sundays we draw deeper into the inward journey of elemental Yin Yoga. Asana practice is followed by journalling and discussion, to process, reflect, to ask questions and to share anything that may have come up in the morning practice.

There is also space to break down the sequence in order for you to learn and understand how to safely sequence and theme your classes. This was also something that was missing from the majority of my past trainings and actually as a Yoga studio owner of 11 years, I remember doing Yoga trial after Yoga trial with so many beautiful teachers but I’ll never forget that most of them were really lacking in safe and intelligent sequencing. Understanding how to intelligently sequence is a game changer in standing out as a teacher and elevating your classes to experiences that are connected and vibrant.

As we play with the elements of Fire, Water, Air and Earth, we experience the balance of each element, that like the chakras, all come together to create harmony within. The groundedness of Earth, the fluidity of Water, the open heartedness of Air and the transformative power of Fire, all hold their own unique qualities that offer us balance.

Online Friday evenings set the tone for the week, as we start with the Vinyasa practice foundations, we break down each elemental sequence, going through the variations and props for every posture. From here, on Saturday morning, we build upon that foundation into a more dynamic flow, as you now hold within you, the knowledge of how to adapt your practice, not just for you as a practitioner but so you learn how to adapt every practice for all of your students, for all bodies and for all energies levels.

In between our time together, our trainees read and learn about Yogic philosophy concepts and have space to consider how these concepts like Ahimsa (non-harm, compassion and self-love) play out in our daily lives. This means that when we are together discussing Philosophy, we can then share our experiences in an interactive way. The Philosophy can really challenge, awaken and change our life perspective and instigate real change in how we think, speak and move through life.

I personally remember my journey with Ahimsa, when I arrived at my first YTT in India, I came from a place of hating myself and punishing myself through over working and an eating disorder. At that time in 2008, the self-love movement wasn’t quite what it is now. I didn’t speak to myself kindly and that was reflected in how I spoke to others. My first teacher, Scarlett was the first to teach me how to move on my mat with kindness and how speak to myself in a loving way. From here it has been a huge journey of moving deeper and deeper into loving myself more. Many years later, Yoga even gave me the foundation to then be ready to go even deeper into that self love journey with a therapist, as I uncovered those deeper layers of harm and more hidden behaviours within myself. As I became kinder to myself, that kindness began to radiate into my relationships with others. Ahimsa is something that seems so simple but is actually an incredibly complex concept that empowers us to really transform ourselves, our relationships and our communities.

Looking back over the years, what I have realised is that I fell in love with not only my Yoga practice and the depth of Yoga Philosophy, but I also fell in love with teaching Yoga and even the business side. I love having my creative admin days in my jammies, where I get a break from giving out through teaching and nowadays, around 60% of my job is at the computer. This is the reality of teaching Yoga and running a Yoga business. I often see students who realise that they love Yoga but they really don’t love teaching and that’s ok. Many leave our trainings with so much self development which often enough in itself.

Are you ready for this part of your journey?
